Events and Festivals

Especially throughout the summer, many festivals take place having as a center the local fairs, which maintain their traditional character, and the local dances and songs with their traditional tone and meter.

Characteristic dances of the area are: "patitos", "syrtos", "tsamikos" and "synkathistos". Moreover, a very interesting element is the dancer’s arrangement, with the double and even triple line of women in front of the men.

The local fairs take place on June 29th, July 20th, August 6th and August 15th, lasting from one to three days.

Furthermore, from time to time, other festivals take place, like the cutting of New Year’s pie, the Syrrakiotes’ meeting from all over Greece, the meeting of the Vlacho-speaking village from this area, which took place for the first time in 1999, hiking in different locations, theatrical performances, performances of the shadow theatre, revival of local customs and other things.

Many well-known people, like the ministers of Agriculture of the European Union in 1994, prominent political figures of our country and representatives of the mass media, often visit this traditional village and honor with their presence such well-organized festivals.

THE SYRRAKIOTES NOWADAYS……

The Syrrakiotes were forced by contemporary demands to leave the village and settle in other areas of Greece, especially of Epirus. The foundation of certain associations, with active presence, was the result of the Syrrakiotes’ need for co-existence, contact and support for the village, conservation and spreading of their local characteristics (musical and dancing tradition, manners, customs, vlacho linguistic idiom etc.) but also the result of the Syrrakiotes’ attempt to contribute to the development of the new areas by intervening to the evolution of local communities (by giving their ideas, suggestions and participating in their realization).

That’s how the Syrrakiotes’ associations of Ioannina, Preveza, Filippiada and plain, Patras, Athens were founded as well as the newspaper “Syrrako’s Echoes” and the sports club “Syrrako’s Stavraetos” (Syrrako’s Golden Eagle).

Moreover, the two legal units of the community, the Cultural Center and the Folklore museum are very active.

Concluding, it must be highlighted that we can notice a massive return of the inhibitants to Syrrako the last years, especially during summer, reconstruction of old houses, construction of new ones, erection of hotels, preservation of public places and historic monuments and others things.

All these have led to an increase in the number of tourists and people who want to visit places that are characterized by an air of pride and inspiration by transferring with their symbols to a spirit of resistance and freedom.
